Bear Bonanza

I'm interested in teddy bears today because when I was trying to go to sleep, I was cuddling with a teddy bear. Mom suggested that I might want to write on my blog. When I was trying to think of something to learn about, I looked at my teddy bear and thought of bears. I told Mom that I've always wanted to learn about bears. A few minutes later, Mom said, "I know a cool story about why stuffed bears are called 'teddy bears.'"

So I looked up "teddy bears" on wikipedia. I learned that President Teddy Roosevelt went bear hunting. And they made a cartoon about it. Then people started making stuffed animal bears that they called "Teddy's bears."

I also learned that a president a long time ago, he was sick when he was a baby. It made it to where he couldn't walk anymore. His name was Franklin Roosevelt.

I think teddy bears are cool!

Whale Washout

Today I want to learn more about whales. So I'm reading the book, Whales. Here are some of the facts I learned:

• The blue whale is the largest whale and animal in the world
• Blue whales weighs as much as 20 African elephants
• Whales are mammals not fish
• When whales jump out of water it is called breeching
• Belugas and dolphins are whales

Whales are my fourth favorite animal!

Glow, Glow, Glow!

Today I was reading a book. It told me that in 2004, scientists found a glow-in-the-dark giant squid in the Pacific Ocean near Japan. They figured out that the squid uses its bright lights to dazzle and catch its prey. It makes me think of my glow-in-the-dark ghost pez!

Whale Vomit

I know this is gonna sound crazy, but whale vomit is used to make perfume. But not all perfume, just some. It starts off stinky, but after 10 years it smells heavenly.

Ocean Zones, Dolphin Hands and Legs, and Dolphin-Whales

I have six scientific Magic Treehouse Research Guides. I was reading Dolphins and Sharks and I learned three things:

1. There were three zones in the ocean - the sunlit zone, the twilight zone, and the midnight zone. They are measured by how much light there is in the water.
2. I learned that dolphins - and this is really crazy - Dolphins used to have hands and legs and live on land! Zoologists studied dolphins and other ocean creatures. They x-rayed the dolphins' flippers and they saw bones that looked like hands. And when they x-rayed their tails they saw bones that looked kind of like legs. That's how they learned that dolphins used to live on land.
3. Dolphins are a small type of whale with teeth.

Since I learned that, it made me feel like a zoologist!

Walrus...cupcakes??!

The Komodo Dragon Feeding

I learned in my book that Komodo Dragons eat birds, bugs, spiders, and small fish. But it didn’t say it eats rabbits but it does. I learned at the zoo it eats rabbits because they fed it a rabbit. It was, I mean, awesome. It’s tongue turned yellow and there was blood all over the KD. This is the movie that I made with my camera:


I also learned that flamingoes like to play peekaboo!
